The Silla del Rey

The Silla del Rey, Worlds Finest Hunting Stool.

Sixty years ago, one of my grandfather’s close friends traveled to Spain to hunt red-legged partridges. He was guided by Basque hunters who lived in the Pyrenees mountains. The Basque men carried a collapsible hunting stool slung over their shoulder that they called “Silla del Rey.” Translated, it means “Seat of the King.”

His friend was so impressed with the Basque stool that he arranged to purchase four of them. Upon his return to the U.S., he gave one of them to my grandfather, Ken Williford, who was an avid wingshooter for all of his years.

He enjoyed his Silla del Rey for three decades before passing away, luckily for me, he made me one. Over the last 20 years, I have taken my collapsable hunting stool on excursions throughout the southwest United States. It has been through rain, bitter cold and the blistering sun, and not once has it failed me. No part has broken or needed repair. In fact, it is more comfortable today then it was the day I received it.

Meet Ben Tadlock

My name is Ben Tadlock, I have never truly known what I wanted to do career wise until recently. One thing I did know is that I wanted to be a creative force in this world because I saw a shortage of creativity in society. All the mistakes, changes, and pure luck has landed me in the position I am in today.

I started doing leatherwork in my dorm room at Weatherford College, the only reason I saw any success at all was my supportive teammates.

I started making wallets for my teammates and documenting my progress on Instagram.

By the time I figured out the ins and outs of leatherwork and the industry itself, I realized I needed to find a niche. Around the time when I had that realization, I found an old hat that read “Silla del Rey, The Worlds Finest Hunting Stool.” hanging from a hook in my grandmas house. She told me the story of my late grandfather who used to make these stools, and it all clicked. A spark ignited in me that day and since it has grown to a raging fire to bring same product to the market that my grandfather once did.
